Le théâtre a été inauguré par une production de "Madame Pompadour " le 11 novembre 1924 sous le nom de Théâtre Martin Beck. Il porte le nom de son propriétaire - le promoteur du vaudeville Martin Beck - et était à ce moment-là le seul théâtre à New York à être détenu à 100%, sans aucune hypothèque. Il a été conçu par G. Albert Lansburgh et n'a changé de nom pour le théâtre Al Hirschfeld que le 21 juin 2003 en l'honneur du défunt caricaturiste de Broadway, décédé en janvier 2003. Le propriétaire et exploitant actuel du théâtre - Jujamcyn Theatres - a acheté le lieu de la famille Beck en 1965.

Commentaire: Contrairement à la croyance populaire, la production originale de Candide a créé tout un émoi avec une forte acclamation allant à Leonard Bernstein. Ce premier engouement n'a pourtant pas signifié un succès et le musical a fermé après 73 représentations.
Il s'agit de la seule version basée sur le livret de Lillian Hellman. (plus)

Commentaire: Richard Rodgers travaillait déjà sur Oklahoma! (avec Oscar Hammerstein II)quand il a retrouvé Lorenz Hart pour relancer leur premier succès. Herbert Fields, qui espérait sortir Hart d’une crise alcoolique, le pressa d’y travailler.
Hart a été expulsé du théâtre le soir de la première pour avoir été indiscipliné. Il est mort cinq jours plus tard après avoir combattu une pneumonie. (plus)
